Google Sync now pushes Gmail!

Early this year Google released Google Sync , which makes your calendar and apps work is if they were on an Exchange server. Missing from the app, of course, was push capability for Gmail.

That day has come, people.

Google just announced that Google Sync now supports push Gmail for Windows Mobile (5.0 and higher). The usual caveat applies, however: If you're already using an Exchange server for other e-mail, you're out of luck.

Get the full deets here .

Windows Mobile 6.5 coming on October 6.

This is an official announcement made by the Windows Mobile team on their blog . Below is a list of operators, device manufacturers who will be launching Windows Phone next month.

I find this paragraph to be quite interesting: When we started work on Windows phones, we met with people all over the world who were likely to buy a smartphone and talked with them about what s important to them in their phone. Looking at the U.S. market, for example, we found that about 15 million people in the next year will buy a new smartphone. I cannot help but wonder who these people are? Note that Windows Mobile 6.5 offers some great improvements. The one I like most is the ability to read new emails, SMSs etc without unlocking the phone first. Slide your finger on the new email icon and it opens the email account or the new email itself if there is just one. Simple but efficient.

Read more about Windows Phone release here .

Here s the list:

In North America: Mobile operators AT&T, Bell Mobility, Sprint, TELUS and Verizon Wireless, and phone manufacturers HP, HTC Corp., LG Electronics, Samsung and Toshiba Corp.

In Europe: Mobile operators Orange, Deutsche Telekom AG and Vodafone Group Plc, and phone manufacturers Acer, HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba

In Latin America: Mobile operator TIM Brazil, and phone manufacturers HTC, LG Electronics and Samsung

In Asia Pacific: Mobile operators NTT DOCOMO Inc., SOFTBANK Mobile Corp., SK Telecom, Telstra and WILLCOM Inc., and phone manufacturers Acer Inc., HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba

FinchSync v0.80 d

Description:
FinchSync is a tool for synchronizing contacts, appointments and tasks from Mozilla email and calendar products with a Pocket PC or SmartPhone.

Contacts are synchronized with the email client's address book. The build-in applications of the Netscape- and Mozilla Application Suite are supported as well as the standalone Mozilla Thunderbird.

Events, Appointments and tasks are synchronized with Lightning, the Mozilla Calendar extension for the Mozilla Suite, Firefox and Netscape or the standalone Sunbird from Version 0.3 and higher (see HowTo section for detailed instructions about syncing with Sunbird).

Users have reported good results synchronizing with Rainlendar or Reminderfox.

Features

The PC part of FinchSync is written in pure Java and runs on every platform supported by the Mozilla Project like Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

The Pocket PC part is written in C#, using the .NET Compact Framework. The application will run on all Pocket PCs with .NET installed – no need to worry about different processors and OS versions. All Pocket PCs running Windows Mobile 2003 second edition or higher should have the .NET Compact Framework already installed.

ActiveSync is not needed (and not available for Mac OS or Linux anyway), but the Pocket PC must be able to connect to the PC via TCP/IP. This can be done using a WLAN connection for example. If this requirement is fulfilled, synchronization can be done from everywhere, even over the internet. The HTTP protocol is used for the communication between PC and Pocket PC. This should work even in firewall-protected environments.

FinchSync is designed to manage contacts, appointments and tasks from different sources and keeps them separated. This means, that private items synchronized at home will not be mixed up with items synchronized in your office.

FinchSync has a user-management. Different users may sync with different sources on your PC. Users may be restricted to read-only access. For example, a user may be allowed to sync with a companies' address book, but not to upload changes.

Requirements:
* Smartphone Windows Mobile

Microsoft Office coming to Nokia smartphones

Microsoft Office Mobile on SymbianFor better or for worse (or own Nokia Experts likely will be less than enthused), Microsoft and Nokia announced today that MSFT's Office Mobile suite is headed to the world's favorite Finnish smartphone maker and the Symbian platform.

Because we love bullet points, here's what's coming, in bullet points:

  • The ability to view, edit, create and share Office documents on more devices in more places with mobile-optimized versions of Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft OneNote.
  • Enterprise instant messaging and presence, and optimized conferencing and collaboration experience with Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile
  • Mobile access to intranet and extranet portals built on Microsoft SharePoint Server.
  • Enterprise device management with Microsoft System Center.

That's stuff that we've enjoyed on Windows Mobile, of course, forever. And it's a no-brainer for Microsoft to go this route. Nokia has 45 percent of the world's smartphone marketshare.

With Bloove it is easy to create, edit and delete contacts on your phone. Our goal is to provide as much abilities as possible on the phone itself. So Bloove supports changing contact attributes, custom labels, multiple field instances, setting of default values, contact pictures.

Contact archive
If you have a large contact list, not all contacts are needed all the time. You can move rarely used contacts to the Archive and get more free space on the phone. Once you need these contacts you can always move them back.

Message folders
Bloove provides access to messages in your Inbox, Sent and other folders. User folders can be created, renamed or deleted. You can move messages between folders.

Message archive
If you delete a message on the phone, its archived copy will be stored on the server. You can archive any messages and folders using our web interface - archived items are deleted from the phone and kept on the server. Use archive function to unclutter your phone and free some space. You can search and browse through your entire message list regardless if a message is archived or not (Archived messages are grayed out). You can always restore archived messages to the phone in case you need them. Delete forever command deletes messages both on the phone and on the server completely and can't be undone.

Send message/Initiate call
You can send a message either by entering number manually or choosing it from your contact list. Bloove supports sending messages to multiple recipients. If you are sending a long message, it is usually divided into smaller parts. Bloove automatically calculates the number of parts to be send. There is an option to send a Flash SMS, which immediately appears on a recipient phone screen.

You can initiate your call remotely on the phone either by entering number manually or choosing it from your contact list. Bloove doesn't route voice channel to your computer, it just dials the number. You can speak as usual with your phone or headset.

You can add, edit and delete browser bookmarks and bookmark folders on your phone.

Phone logs
Bloove provides access to logs of your incoming, dialed and missed calls - with call time and duration and links to the corresponding contact. Data usage logs (connection time, bytes sent and received) are also available. All logs from the phone are archived on the server without any specific command from the user. If you delete log record, it will be deleted both from the server and the phone and it can't be undone.

Windows Mobile: What's the Future Hold?

An interesting question coming from a Web site dedicated to Windows Mobile, right? While we believe Windows Mobile headed in the right direction, you could make the argument (and, yes, many do) that it's stagnant, stale, and on it's last leg.

With the glowing (almost nauseating) success of Apple's iPhone, the ever present Blackberry, pesky Nokia Symbian OS as well as the new kids on the block Android and Palm Pre the smartphone arena has gotten crowded. Does Windows Mobile have enough staying power to last? Whats the future hold for this OS?

One potential factor in WinMo's survival rate is the number of phones that are on the way to market. Arguably, one of iPhone's strengths is that there's only one iPhone. There are dozens of Windows Mobile phones on the market plus two versions of the OS. Would Windows Mobile be more successful if there were fewer choices? What about a hybrid between WinMo Pro and Standard?

Well here's your chance to sound off on what you think the future holds for Windows Mobile. Head on over to this forum discussion and tell us what you think the future holds for Windows Mobile. To help motivate you, we'll be giving away copies of Vito Technologies Communications Suite to ten randomly selected posts. Posts made between now and 5:00pm EST on Wednesday, July 29th will be eligible for the drawing. You do have to be registered to post in the forums, which is an easy process that starts here.

Thanks to Vito Technologies for sponsoring this post and providing the software prizes.
