AppToDate: Software updater

There are a handful of decent programs for Windows that willhelp you determine if the software on your PC is up to date. But as far as we know, nobody's ever developed such an application for Windows Mobile. Until now. AppToDate is a utility for Windows Mobile that checks to see if your installed software is up to date, and if not, it will automatically download updates.

Right now, only a handful of applications are supported, and AppToDate is still in the early beta stages. But we love the concept. Imagine only having to install software on your phone or PDA once. From then on, every time an update is issued, it would be installed automatically.

Developers can join the beta by adding AppToDate support to their applications, and anyone can download and install the application on their Windows Mobile device. Assuming they have Windows Mobile 5.0 or later. Windows Mobile 2003 doesn't appear to be supported.

Remove Duplicate Contacts

Paul over at Modaco has written this very handy little application that will remove duplicate contacts from your Windows Mobile Device!

Contact changer

Description:

Are you changing all your contacts one by one to make them appear as "Firstname Lastname" in the contacts application? Then Contact changer will help you!

You can also add the company name to the display name.

Please note that this fix won't run on older OS version than Windows Mobile 5.0.

Installation from desktop:

Download Contact_changer_v1.3.exe.

Establish an ActiveSync connection and run it on your desktop.

Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installation on device:

Download Contact_changer_v1.3.cab.

If you downloaded it to your desktop, transfer it to your phone by either ActiveSync or a memory card.

Open the .cab file in File Explorer.

Run the application from Programs.

SmartToolkit

SmartToolkit adds some sweet functions to your device, as well as a beautiful interface.

Picking a phone entry with a contact that has multiple numbers

Here is a neat feature you can use with your Windows Mobile device if you have a contact that has multiple phone entries.

When you have a contact highlighted you can press the d-pad Left and Right keys to change communication methods for the person (work, home, mobile, txt, email etc). Watch really close when pressing Left/Right, and you'll see the tiny "w" turn to "m", "h", "e" etc.

This is a neat option when you want to call someone and the "default" number is not the one you want.

It allows to change the default number too. When one scrolls through the numbers using the d-pad and stops to the selected entry (i.e. h, w etc.), WM "remembers" the choice next time you look for the same contact, so establishing a new default (normally is cellphone).

You Tube

YouTube is a phenomenon, the perfect playground and medium for the vidiot generation, and I personally am extremely grateful to the designers, those who contribute to the site as well as the guys who maintain it. But what most people, including myself are even more grateful for are the portable versions for mobile handsets. Until now very few manufacturers have bothered to incorporate a preloaded YouTube client onto their handsets. Apple’s iPhone and HTC are two of the few that have managed to deliver.

However, the limitation has been expanded and YouTube has now come up with the perfect solution by designing and releasing native applications for the Symbian S60 platform as well as another version for Windows Mobile devices.

For the Windows mobile users, the YouTube app will use Silverlight instead of Flash. For the Symbian users, they will be able to access all features just like they would via the PC. However there are a few negatives. For example reports have stated that it can’t save videos for later viewing, there’s no support yet for Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic handset since the app has been specifically designed to support handsets with a display resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. We’re quite sure though that an update will be out any time in the near future.

Internet Explorer Mobile 6 to be available on new WM 6.1 smartphones!

Windows Mobile 6.5 has been the talk of the WinMo-town of late. With an arguably more finger-friendly UI and its full-featured Internet Explorer Mobile 6 promising to deliver a more desktop-like browsing experience, Windows Mobile 6.5 is the de facto “next-big-thing” in the Windows Mobile camp. Unfortunately, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has taken a non-upgrade stance on the new WinMo OS - Windows Mobile 6.5 will only be available on new devices; there will be no updates for current Windows Mobile smartphones.

But, that doesn’t mean current WinMo fans are going to be left out of the IE Mobile 6 party. We’re just learning that Microsoft is looking to give its installed Windows Mobile user-base the same IE Mobile 6 web browsing experience that WinMo 6.5 users will be enjoying soon enough (hopefully sooner, rather than later). It seems that Microsoft wanted to avoid updating current-generation WM-based handsets with the 6.5 update because the sheer size of the .cab file proved problematic. So, to appease its customers, Microsoft will be rolling out Windows Mobile 6.1 AKU 1.4, bundled with IE Mobile 6, on all new Windows Mobile smartphones released from now until 6.5 goes lives.

So, there you have it folks. Microsoft won’t be giving Windows Mobile 6.1 users any sort of update to Windows Mobile 6.5, again, due to the enormous size of the WM6.5 file. But if you happen to be buying a new Windows Mobile handset soon, IE Mobile 6 is in the cards. Of course, there are going to be plenty of cooked WM 6.1 AKU 1.4 ROMs floating around in due time…

LG HQ is Pearl-riffic

Now, we're not ones to complain about any Windows Mobile Standard device that comes out these days -- they're getting so few and far between that we don't want to further scare carriers away from asking for them. So instead of kvetching about how the LG HQ looks and smells like a HP Voice Messenger, we'll note how the LG HQ also looks to put the BlackBerry Pearl in its place. If LG puts some marketing weight behind it, it might actually manage to draw some of those Pearl users away, because the specs are nothing to sniff at:
