WM5torage v1.9

Description:
This program will export the flash memory card inside the smartphone as usual USB Mass Storage device (ordinary "usb disk") - effectively turning smartphone into flash reader.

Take note that speed will be dependent on your PDA/smartphone hardware - it will be high-speed USB only if your device actually high-speed capable (most are not), and also most devices have quite slow flash writers. Some devices with proper hardware support perform in spectacular speed though (for example HTC Athena works in high USB 2 speed if you export a microdrive).

WM5torage could work with different phones and PDAs, hovewer I cant be sure about compatibility with every device ever made, as I had to break some specifications to defuse "anomalies" (bugs?) in the firmware USB drivers. This just means what it means - some devices/firmwares have problems with WM5torage, and on some it won't work at all (notably on Typhoon/Feeler/C500/8010/8020 with "unofficial" WM5).

When activated, memory card must be made not be accessible to the smartphone, as all direct access to the flash card will be routed to USB. Take note that if some currently running programs have files open from the storage card, that can prevent Mass Storage from activation ("error 1f"). In that case, try to close all running programs (soft reset is needed sometimes).

Windows Mobile 5 is required. Sorry, but I cant possibly make it work on WM 2003, as only WM5 allows USB protocol implementation separate from USB hardware driver - on WM 2003 Ill have to rewrite whole USB hardware drivers, and of course its not feasible.

If you want to uninstall it, I strongly recommend to de-activate mass storage mode first.

Of course, you will also need full application unlock. Take note that some recipies do not do full unlock, they still leave some API locked. People who getting "error 57" most likely havent fully unlocked their smartphones. Try this one:
to HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies
add new value "0000101b": dword = 1

That would set security model to "one-tier" - unsigned applications/components will still ask for confirmation, but after you confirm, they will launch in full-trust access mode, like on WM5 PocketPCs.

Two new features:
- "Two-way" - ability to simultaneously access the card both from Windows Mobile and from USB, so when you connect USB the card will not disappear on the phone! This however has one limitation - one of them always must be read only access, to prevent corruption.
So two scenarios are possible:
1. Enable "Read-Only". The card will be read-only from USB. However, Windows Mobile will still have full access to the card.
2. Disable "Read-Only". The card will be writeable from USB. Windows Mobile will still see the card, but will be unable to write to it.

WARNING:
The ability to choose different card slots to export will potentially allow you to export the system(firmware) storages/disk partitions. While it can be very powerful tool, improper use of it may damage the firmware data and will require a re-flashing, or in worst cases it may even render the device PERMANENTLY unusable. There is no 100% way to automatically determine if the given storage device is the system one, WM5torage will only try to make guesses about it and display warnings, but its not 100% proof. So if you see the "second free memory card available", dont rush with formatting it/copying data on it (especially when you know that your device have only one card slot)!! You have been warned!

Changelog:

v1.9 (27 Apr 2009):
- added the "two-way" mode
- proper support for device icon and description in the File Explorer. So device will not be just generic "Removable Drive (F:)". It will have proper description and even big Vista icon (if your device is modern enough to expose custom sync icon artwork).
- bug fixes, in particular fix for invisible checkmarks in the Troubleshooting menu

v1.8:
- Added the long-awaited option to lock/dismount card only when USB cable is actually attached (so when you will disconnect the device, it will automatically see the card again, without the need to deactivate WM5torage).
- Added the troubleshooting options for different firmwares/devices (should be tweaked only if WM5torage does not work properly).
- GUI is slightly modified according to Microsoft guidelines for better support of landscape and small-screen devices.

v1.75:
- Many changes to the driver to allow for more invisible error recovery. Can possibly help with read/write instabilities on some devices. Also can help with preventing the complete freezes in case of USB/flash memory errors.
- Added the quick "blink" indication when choosing the LEDs/vibrators.
- Improved the checking for "system" storages. Will try to more intelligently choose the storage card device as default right after install. Can help on devices where "DSK1:" is infact an internal storage, and the storage card is for example "DSK3:".
- More compatible re-mount mechanism. Possibly can help with "Hang on deactivate" issue.

v1.73:
- More of bugs fixed. Restored compatibility with some devices that were supported in 1.5x.
- Moved start shortcut from "Accessories" subfolder to main Programs menu.

v1.71:
- Bug fixes.
- Added the command line switch -t to "flip-flop" between active and unactive states.
- Files are now compressed with UPX.

v1.7:
- Added ability to choose the PDA/smartphone storage device to export as USB Mass Storage. Helpful for PDAs/phones with several card slots or internal "file stores".

v1.6b:
- Fixed a minor issue with applicaiton icon not appearing in "Accessories" Start Menu folder after installation on PDAs.
- Full compliance with USB Mass Storage Bootability Specification. Now booting PC from smartphone as USB stick should always properly work, provided your computer's BIOS is modern enough to properly USB-drive-boot. Checked it via booting FreeDOS and PuppyLinux from my 8310 - seem to work ok.
- Improved general compliance with USB Mass Storage protocol. Still not 100% compliant though, due to the built-in hardware driver limitations & bugs.
- Added command line switches to control utility "remotely", via scripting utils or batch files & shortcuts:
>> -a Activate mass storage mode
>> -d Deactivate mass storage mode
>> -q Quit
Switches can be combined, they will be executed in order. For example, "WM5torage -a -q" will launch utility, activate mass storage mode (if not active already), and quit after activation is completed.

v1.53:
- USB device will not appear on PC as "unnamed" anymore, but in the form of "WM5torag"(sorry only 8 chars in ID) + "device name". Helps when multiple devices are connected and you are using "safe removal".

v1.52:
- LED interface tweaks.
- Fix for a small issue with LED/vibrator not going off.

v1.51:
- Added ability to choose indication LEDs on Read and Write operations (you can set both to same LED). Take note that there only LEDs that system reports to be available, and on many platforms only one LED (and vibrator) is actually reported as application-controllable.
- Another change to "suspend-prevention" code to prevent some PDAs to going into sleep in the middle of transfer and interrupting the transfer

v1.48:
- If there is Inbox window open in background, and "activation error 1f" happens, will try to automatically close Inbox window to prevent activation error. This just requests Inbox to close as user can do, so you need not to worry for it - it shouldnt cause any problems with messaging.

v1.4:
- Driver revamp, added asynchronous processing. If device can do USB transfers and read/write from card simultaneously, there will be significant speed increase - up to limit of either USB controller or Flash memory (what is slower). For my 8310 / SanDisk 2Gb setup it gave about 20% speed increase.

v1.35:
- Moved all natural language strings/messages into resource string tables, to allow for resource i18n/translation.

v1.34:
- On deactivate, switch will be made not just to RNDIS, but to previously remembered driver. I.e. if you will set ActiveSync to Serial mode, it will not revert to RNDIS anymore on Mass Storage deactivation, it should remain Serial.

v1.33:
- Restart will not be suggested if installation wasnt successful.

v1.32:
- Added possiblie explanations to most common activation errors (1f and 57).

v1.3:
- Added prompt to soft-restart the device after installation.
- When storage is attached to USB host, mobile device USB controller and flash disk are ordered to be kept in "Power On" state.
- Added switch to choose between "Removable" and usual ("Hard Disk") device classes. Will affect how the host OS treats the device - for instance, it will not create System Restore and Recycle Bin if class is Removable.

v1.21:
- Added some additional diag checks to help evaluate possible problems.

v1.2:
- Added write-protection switch.
- Added checks for ability to actually open memory card (card existance).
- If "storage card" installation chosen, will install to main memory anyway, as it cant properly run from storage card.

Requirement:
* Smartphone Windows Mobile 5.0
* Smartphone Windows Mobile 6.0

YouTube Client gets updated to v2.0.9

Lordy knows what exactly has been updated with YouTube's dedicated video client , but it jumped from v2.0.2 to v2.0.9 sometime...recently.

One obvious and welcome change is program compatibility finally with 320x320 devices (before it would rotate and crash on Treos), so that's pretty cool. We also imagine they've improved their streaming codecs and optimized the app a little.

So if you had some problems back when it debuted, you may want to take another chance: http://m.youtube.com

PhoneLog v1.7.3

Description:
PhoneLog is a simple Windows Mobile application that logs all missed and placed phone calls to your calendar with the call duration.

Localization Support (future use only, not available yet)
I currently do not have any easy way to change the language or wording using for the calendar entries, however with a registry editor you can do it yourself. To setup another language (or change the default) follow these steps:
1. Open/create HKLM\SOFTWARE\Infinityball\PhoneLog\Localization\ key.
2. Create a string value in the Localization key named "Lang", set that value to whatever language, the default is "en".
3. Create a registry key with the same name of the value set on the Lang string value, so in the example above it would be named "en".
4. Create string values in the key created in step 3 using the values below:

Subject of a finished call:
Key: "CallTo"
Default: "Talked to "

Body of a finished call:
Key: "CallFrom"
Default: "From: "

Key: "CallStarted"
Default: "Started: "

MortScript interprets a (quite) simple batch language. If you know .bat files in DOS or shell scripts: it's something like that. Its focus is to remote control or launch other applications, not to write real applications. I.e., you can't do complex dialogs or graphics with it.

* Support of ZIP archives (no replacement of existing archived files)
* Read/write access to serial (COM) ports
* Create and remove directories
* Read from and write into the registry
* Open and close connections (closing no longer possible since WM5 AKU3), read files from the Internet

* Lots of system features (e.g. rotation, volume, backlight brightness, soft reset, battery level, ...)
* Subroutines (Call, Sub/EndSub)
* Variables, expressions (integer operations, string contatenations, ...), and lots of integrated functions

Since V4.0 with lots of new functions and a modern syntax.
The old syntax will work, too, except for some rare exceptions.

UCWEB: Yet another browser for WM - but it's actually really good

Yes folks, yet another web browser has slowly crept out from some other company. This one is called UCWEB . Never heard of it? Neither had we but according to its Wiki it claims it is "...now ranked #1 in the Chinese mobile web browser market, with over 60 million accumulated users and over 10 billion page views per month by November 2008". Gotta be worth a spin!

Lets cut to the chase: UCWEB is in the vein of Opera Mini: it uses servers to compress and reformat full websites to dramatically improve speed and appearance. But UCWEB has waaay more functionality than Opera Mini which is what makes it a fine alternative (plus you don't need finicky Java installed).

Wanna see it in action with a brief tour of its features? Click the link to get the full scoop with some pics. <!--break-->

First, you'll notice that for some reason UCWEB is kind of hiding this strictly WM version from their main page. Dunno why, but it can be found here: download UCWEB .

Second, while it should run on WM5 and WM6 touchscreen devices, non-touchscreen (aka WM Standard) devices appear to be unsupported at this time. Boo.

The download and install is exceptionally tiny: ~500kb which is a huge welcome from the MBs that browsers like Skyfire, Opera Mobile, Netfront and Iris require. Further it uses about ~3mb of RAM which is also on the low end for a browser.

According to their site, UCWEB accesses the internet via "CMNET and CMWAP" and is a combo WAP/Java that supports standard html, wml files and Java script. What you need to know is that technically any personal info you put in is re-transmitted through their servers and while this makes a great user experience, it is a could be risky for personal data for those concerned. On the other hand...it's crazy fast.

After installation, you have a simple icon in your Start menu to launch the browser. The first launch is the slowest as it appears to authenticate and register the device with their server, so give it time. Relaunches are nearly instant after this initial run.
Feature rundown

Here's what UCWEB has that makes it unique and pretty killer:
" Download Manger: start, pause downloads, control where files default to and see your download history
" File Manager : explore and access files on your device for easy uploads or to view images
" Tabbed browser : open any link or image or new page in a new tab
" Built in Search : quickly launch their search engine via Menu key
" Options, options : You can control the size of the font, spacing, scrolling action, zoom or reformat views, where to save files, image quality, pre-load cache settings
" Skins: by default you have black, classic blue, pink and night view
" Better image handling: zoom in, save, etc.

The way UCWEB can be best described is think Opera Mini but more WM friendly with a ton of configuration options and tighter integration with the OS.

As far as speed goes, on a site like www.dlisted.com it takes about 10 seconds to load whereas Opera Mini 4.2 was about 8-9 seconds, so we're talking pretty close in regards to speeds between the two.

(And as of now, though they list video support and even link to YouTube, it does not appear able to play videos...yet)
Conclusion

UCWEB has me pretty excited. While I found Opera Mini 4.2 with some Java hacks (found at XDA) to be pretty darn good, UCWEB is much better suited for WM Pro devices. The Left/Right Soft keys give all the necessary menu options needed for breezy web surfing with "Enter address" being the 1st option which is just logical.

The UI is also very nice: it's all finger-friendly, swishy and just plain nice to look at. To go back a page, just swipe your thumb left; to go forward, right. The reformatting is also much better than Opera Mini as images are kept a more reasonable size, plus with the ability to change font and the font-size (we like 15), it is much easier on the eyes to read. Finally, the built in "update app" checker makes having the latest version simple.

While UCWEB has appeared to slip under the radar so far and it might be eclipsed by Opera Mobile 9.7 (which basically finally combines Opera Mobile and Mini) but for now, it is definitely still worth checking out.

Location Tracking with Google Latitude

Google Latitude is a free application that brings location tracking to your mobile phone even without GPS. That means if you are travelling with a mobile phone that has Google Latitude installed, your family members and friends can track your exact location on Google Maps through any Internet connected computer.

The software is currently available for most BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Nokia S60 phones though an iPhone version of Latitude is still in the works - you can visit google.com/latitude from your mobile browser to know if Latitude is supported on your phone on not.

I was in Bangalore last month for a search conference and my family members were able to track my journey using the computer thats in our living room. Latitude probably helped in reducing my mobile "roaming" bill as well because earlier, if I were to drive to another city, my mom would call me every few hours just to know where I was - now she can just locate me through the Internet.
Google Latitude Tips & Tricks

Tip #1. You dont want a stranger to know that you are inside a banks ATM so make sure that you dont approve every incoming friend request on Latitude even if the request has come from a person who is listed as a contact in your email address book. Only family members and close friends should be part of your Google Latitude network.

Tip #2. Google Latitude determines your current location using the nearby cell phone towers. If, for some reason, Latitude is unable to detect your exact location, you can set it manually on your phone.

Tip #3. Google Latitude is a data intensive application and I dont really recommend it if you have a pay-per-byte data plan on your phone.

Tip #4. You dont need a mobile phone to broadcast your current location via Latitude. If you have a web browser with Google Gears and youre inside a Wi-Fi zone, Latitude can still detect and update your location on the Internet using the GeoLocation API .

Tip #5. If you are travelling with a laptop and therere no wireless access points nearby, you can manually update your location on Latitude though this iGoogle Gadget .

Tip #6. Google Latitude can drain the battery of your phone more quickly as the application attempts to update your location as you move around. Please keep point this in mind if your phone battery is low.

Tip #7. Entering a pub but dont want mom to know about it? Make sure you either hide the location in Latitude or set it manually to a different place.

Tip #8. Google Latitude wont work inside an airplane so prior to boarding the aircraft, you can set your status in Google Latitude to something like "Boarded flight American Airlines 4815 to New York - On time - ETA 5:30 PM." You can now switch off the mobile phone but your Latitude status will help family members who are planning to receive you at the airport.

Tip #9. Google Latitude can bring some piece of mind. For example, if your kids have just joined kindergarten, you can mute the ringer of your mobile phone and drop it somewhere inside their school bag. This will help you keep track of the school bus and youll always know where your children are.

The only piece missing here is a Google Latitude API - that means you cant update your current location on Google Maps from external apps like Twitter or Facebook.

Google Maps update fixes a number of bugs

FreeRange user Rajesh Handa wanted you to see this:

"Google Maps update fixes a number of bugs"

Google has released an updated version of Google Maps, version 3.0.1.4, which focuses on issues surrounding the Google Latitude feature. For those unfamiliar with Latitude, it is a feature that lets you keep track of your location and shares it with a social network of friends/colleagues.

The fixes include:
" Background location updates: Problems associated with running Latitude in the background have been fixed to allow continuous updating of your location.
" Auto-restart location updates: If for some reason you turn off your phone (battery dies, you hit the power button) Latitude will now automatically restart location updates, when running in the background, whenever power is restored to the phone.
" Force location updates: Manually refreshing your Latitude friends list forces the update of your own location.
" Backlight timing: The backlight behavior now runs according to your system settings. Previously if Latitude was running in the background it had a tendency to keep your backlight on regardless of systems settings.
" Additionally, login errors and other internal errors that effected Latitudes performances were addressed by the update.

The updated version, 3.0.1, can be downloaded here .

Orkut App for Mobile Phones Is Coming Soon

orkut mobile websiteExactly an year after releasing the mobile version of Orkut website, Google is all set to introduce a downloadable Orkut App for mobile phones.

The Orkut Mobile App is a Java Application and can therefore work on BlackBerry, Nokia or any other J2ME-enabled mobile phones much like the existing Gmail app.

There are a couple of reasons why you may want to install the Orkut Mobile App instead of using the Orkut mobile site.

1. With the Orkut Mobile App, you can capture photos using the mobile phone’s camera and then post them to your Orkut Albums in a click. A similar feature is also available inFacebook for BlackBerry.

2. The Orkut Mobile App will enable you access all your Orkut scraps, friends list and photos even in offline mode.

3. The App will treat your Orkut Friends list and Mobile Phonebook as one so you will be able to call Orkut friends from the phone.

4. You can share your Orkut photo album with your mobile phone contacts via SMS messages. Your contacts can then view your Orkut photos even if they’re not a member of Orkut.

To download the Orkut Mobile App. you may simple visit m.google.com/orkut from the browser of your mobile phone though the site isn’t live yet. These details were available on the Orkut site momentarily but were soon removed for some unknown reason.
