Windows Mobile: What's the Future Hold?

An interesting question coming from a Web site dedicated to Windows Mobile, right? While we believe Windows Mobile headed in the right direction, you could make the argument (and, yes, many do) that it's stagnant, stale, and on it's last leg.

With the glowing (almost nauseating) success of Apple's iPhone, the ever present Blackberry, pesky Nokia Symbian OS as well as the new kids on the block Android and Palm Pre the smartphone arena has gotten crowded. Does Windows Mobile have enough staying power to last? Whats the future hold for this OS?

One potential factor in WinMo's survival rate is the number of phones that are on the way to market. Arguably, one of iPhone's strengths is that there's only one iPhone. There are dozens of Windows Mobile phones on the market plus two versions of the OS. Would Windows Mobile be more successful if there were fewer choices? What about a hybrid between WinMo Pro and Standard?

Well here's your chance to sound off on what you think the future holds for Windows Mobile. Head on over to this forum discussion and tell us what you think the future holds for Windows Mobile. To help motivate you, we'll be giving away copies of Vito Technologies Communications Suite to ten randomly selected posts. Posts made between now and 5:00pm EST on Wednesday, July 29th will be eligible for the drawing. You do have to be registered to post in the forums, which is an easy process that starts here.

Thanks to Vito Technologies for sponsoring this post and providing the software prizes.

Google Maps 3.2: Introducing 'Layers'

Well, looky here! Google did a major update to Google Maps for mobile. Previous version was v3.0.1.6 and the new one is a spanking v3.2. Such a leap must mean something new and sure enough, there is Google Layers a hitherto unknown feature from our overlords.

Layers allow you to add extra information to your current view, including Wikipedia entries. That's right, you can now pull down localized Wikipedia info which appear as iconic "W"s on your screen. Selecting them will bring up a lil' info bubble on that area. Other "layers" include traffic, transit and My Maps which are your personal customized maps (done via desktop). Huzzah! That's pretty darn cool.

They've also fixed a few bugs, re-enabled copy/paste from various field (thank you), additional search results and...well shoot, they even put all this info in an actual 'Release Notes' file which you can read in gory detail.

OutSync: Sync Facebook and Outlook Contacts

Version 1.0
Cost: Free
Mel Sampat(Developer Info )

If youre syncing your Outlook contacts to your mobile device, wont you like to match the names with their photos? Rather than having to locate and assign each of your 250 contacts personal pictures, why not try OutSync to synchronize their Facebooks profile pictures automatically?

Note: The names of the contact on both Outlook and Facebook needs to be matched up before it can be automatically assigned.

With OutSyncs function to sync photos with matching contacts, you the Outlook user, will have most if not all of your Outlook contacts profiled. Great, what now? Since this is actually a desktop application, it would not be surprising to receive comments regarding its relevance to your mobile device. Ah-ha, were here to answer just that.
" First and foremost, install and run the OutSync program.
" Launch it and you will be asked for your Facebooks login credential, and depending on your level of trust, this may be your final step.
" Okay, once logged in, OutSync will scan through your contacts in Facebook and Outlook to find matching pairs.
" Once found, the list on the left-side will be the ones ready to be synced.
" Lastly, if you already have your Outlook setup within your ActiveSync, simply plug in the ActiveSync cable, sit back and let ActiveSync do the rest.

To test it out, just go to the contacts whose names are listed in #4 (the matching ones) and ta-da, their Facebooks profile picture will be there for your convenience.

You can certainly go fanatic and update all of your Outlook contacts to match with your Facebook ones. Oh, Ive got only 600 more to go.

Google Reader now on Kinoma Play

Couple of cool updates for Kinoma Play this week. First up is the addition of Google Reader. (For the uninitiated, Google Reader is an RSS reader. For the un-uninitiated, see Malatesta's oldie but goodie piece on the importance of RSS .)

For all intents and purposes, what Kinoma is giving us here is access to feeds already in Google Reader. And that's nice because there's little I hate more than having to reload (or export) feeds from one place to another. Just sign in, and everything shows up. Kinoma says its GR app is in beta, so be forewarned.

Also added is Yelp (a location-based local business search) and Flights, as the name suggests, tracks flights.

More info over at the Kinoma blog . To get the new apps, first get the latest update of Kinoma Play, then choose "Get apps" from the home screen.

Cost: Free

Version 2.05
Cost: Free
Hou Ming (Developer Info )

We are always looking for the next bigger and better application or at least an addition to the existing ones. If youre a regular user of the default File Explore on your Windows Mobile device, you would have noticed that the features are rather limited. File Explorer Extension adds to that lack and give it added features that you wish the application had in the first place.

While the application may be introduced through XDA-Developer, it is developed and released through a Japanese site. Dont worry about all the Japanese text, just Ctrl+F to find File Explorer Extension V2.05. Download using the 3rd link from the top that has the word CAB& in the link title.
Features Once installed, nothing more needs to be done. All you need to do is to open the File Explorer to access the extended functions as listed below:

" Tree view of folders; you can now jump easily from a location to any other on your device in one step.
" Show extension option for those who ask themselves the same question I do: What type of file is this?

Facebook Mobile Photos Upload through Email

If you are a Facebook user, youd probably seen photos uploaded that has the note Mobile Upload. In order to have that note attached next to your pictures, you will need a phone that has all of the following: built-in camera, Facebook application and a data plan. Now there is another alternative: using Email.
How? While researching on the topic, we found this useful article on MakeUseOf.com that discusses how you can upload pictures onto Facebook through email and solutions to possible errors. Facebook have since implemented an updated and effectively simpler method for users who prefer to upload pictures through email.

While previously a tedious process with no guarantee of success, you may now access upload your photos to Facebook by simply sending an email to a personalize email address that Facebook have assigned to you. Please note that this is your personal upload email address and should not be shared with anyone else.

Upload Photos via Email

More information on Upload Photos via Email

Log on to your Facebook account and point your browser to Facebook Mobile and find your personal upload email. Once you have that, you can now upload any pictures to your Facebook account through the use of the upload email address.

Have fun uploading!

Bing.mu hacked by&Google!!!

The title is just a joke (Relax Sergey and larry:)). However, when you type www.bing.mu you get a screen with a Google text box. Go figure.

Download YouTube Videos to your Mobile Device with GetyTV

Depinder Bharti (Developer Info )

Have you ever spotted a video on YouTube and have a strong desire to own it? Since YouTube videos doesnt have download capabilities like Vimeos does, were grateful for GetyTV which allows you to download YouTube videos on the go, with great ease.

The application is light-weighted and have additional settings such as the use of proxy. If you are in places where YouTube is banned on the network, using proxy is a good way to by-pass such security barrier (not recommended). As stated above, the application is easy to set up and get going.
How easy? Here are the steps that you will need to take from getting the application installed to downloading the video:
" Download the cab file below
" Install it in any storage
" Start it up by clicking on the happy smiley face logo
" Enter the video you are searching for
" Click Search and choose the video that you like
" When you are at the video page, choose the video format and click Download It to begin the download

Note: Make sure you have either unlimited data plan or WiFi before using the application. Getting billed for downloading video will not be pleasant.

Review: YomoMedia, Your Mobile Media

Wow. That’s how we feel towards Yomomedia. Short for Your Mobile Media, YomoMedia seem to have everything you need in a RSS aggregator for all sorts of media type. The best part is its equally well oiled web application, the Yomo Reader. Apart from reading any new updated articles, you can listen to podcast or watch video all from the application.

YomoMedia is unique and set apart from other RSS feed reader such as Google Reader and Bloglines, mainly because it is both a web service and a mobile service, both are fully-developed applications and they communicate with one another seamlessly. Provided as a freeware, this application, if you follow any sort of RSS feeds at all, this application should be on your device.

Installation

Download the desktop install exe file from YomoMedia or at the end of this page. You can install it in any storage. And the lovely thing about installing YomoMedia’s mobile application is that it provides you with the option to go directly to the application rather than having to go to Start > Program and scroll all the way down to find the initial Y.

Design

Lovely design, really. Since this application is has considerably more functions, we’d except there to be a lack of focus on design. But were we wrong. Once loaded, the entire UI is fairly intuitive where you have the bundles of RSS feeds on the top and a listing of them below. The font, color and the relations between components are all ergonomically sound.

They did however left out efforts to stylize its setting page, leaving it to the ruin of the standard Windows Mobile layout. We forgive them just because they amount of settings and information they provide through the ranks. We will discuss them further in the usability/features section.

Another component that we really like is the Status bar on the bottom. It provides useful information such as the update schedule as well as download status of videos or audios.

Usability

The application is fairly easy for pickup uses. You don’t have to wait forever for the application to load. Once the application is loaded, you can use your finger to slide between categories (or bundles as its called).

When it comes to regular text RSS feeds, you can add your own Feed provided that you have a user-defined bundle that you have created on the web application, Yomo Reader. Otherwise, you can pick from a range of pre-defined categories, including Entertainment, Sports and Video.

To read the feeds, simply click on the name of the feed and it will take you to the latest feeds available. From there you can pick and choose the articles that you’d like to read further. Do note that the length of the synopsis or the article is defined by the feed owner (i.e. summary, full, etc).

For video and podcasts, you can download them by clicking on the button provided. Once downloaded, you can click on Menu and hit play to play the media. By default, YomoMedia will utilize the media player on your device (e.g. for Omnia, TouchPlayer will be launched).

Features

  • Finger friendly interface that allows you to switch between bundles or categories
  • Ability to add user-defined bundles and feeds
  • Ability to watch or listen to media feeds, such as podcast
  • Status bar that displays information about updates and download status
  • Various useful information such as memory info and user info

Pros

  • Great design and user-interface that utilizes finger-friendly gesture
  • Ability to download multimedia feeds
  • Informational status bar

Cons

  • While the application does allow for finger-friendly gesture, the buttons and each selectable feeds are sometimes too small for a finger to pin-point.
  • It would also be great if a Search feature can be added, to search for feeds that is out there

Should I get it?

This is a great RSS feed reader for various content types. And with asynchronize-able web application, you can better manage your feeds on a screen bigger than 3 inches wide. If you are following any RSS feed, use YomoMedia to keep track of them on the go.
